Yazzie draws from both the positive and
negative realities of the worlds in which he coexists, embracing the
Navajo idea that life is based on beauty and balance. Certain motifs
appear and reappear on his canvasses: symbols of the four directions,
the moon, stars and images of the two adjoining buttes that tower over
his ancestral homeland are often featured. Peterson brings a
contemporary interpretation to the creation mythology, ceremonies and
day-to-day life of his people. With swirling color in densely packed
paintings this artist commands attention while rewarding viewers time
and again with his unique sensibilities.
