Nocona Burgess
 

Artist Nocona J. Burgess is the great-great grandson of arguably the most famous Comanche Indian history has to offer: Chief Quanah Parker. This notable heritage, coupled with the prevalence of artists throughout both sides of his Comanche family tree, left Burgess with little choice but to excel. And, through his compelling portraits and spellbinding animals he has reached that success.
 
Burgess graduated from the prestigious Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico with an Associate in Fine Arts degree then took a break from the art world, feeling the inherent pressures to make a living. Five years later, Burgess walked away from the success he had achieved to rededicate himself to art. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts, success in the form of numerous awards, commissions and published articles about his work and career followed. A bold style of elemental images is characteristic of a Burgess canvas. "I like the idea of modern Indians - after all, that's who I am," the artist says. "I loved the old style, but it seemed distant to me. To this day I enjoy painting old portraits and traditional subjects, but in my own style."

There is a deep connection to the symbolism of the artist's Comanche upbringing on every canvas Burgess creates; his imagery often incorporates the curvature or full lines of a circle, the sacred symbol of life's continuum.
